April Gardening Tips

With the growing season underway let’s get sowing seeds, planting vegetables already done from seed. There is lots to do in the garden this month the garden is waking up and needs a spring clean.

  • Sow now Broad beans, Carrots, Leeks, Lettuce, Onions Beetroot, Celery and many Herbs.
  • Apply slug pellets to Newly planted plants.
  • Pinch out tips of early sown Sweet Peas.
  • Remove moss from lawns with a stiff rake.
  • Apply fertilisers to your borders and containers( slow release ones will be ideal) Deadhead Primroses and Pansies to prolong flowering.
  • Plant out Tomatoes under glass.
  • Divide and plant perennial plants into new flowering positions.
  • Cut back Hydrangeas to a outward facing strong bud.
  • Apply grass seed now to repair patches on the lawn.
  • Look out for aphids on your Lupins and spray accordingly.
  • Tie in climbers onto the trellises and fence panels.
  • Apply weedkillers to patios.
  • Use patio cleaners to clean moss and algae from patios and paths.
  • Deadhead camellias to prolong flowering.
  • Water and feed containers with liquid feeds.
  • Plant out second early potatoes.
  • Spray for Lilly beetles (these are the red ones) Put up canes to support Runner beans.
  • Sow seeds of Runner beans, Climbing French beans.
  • Protect Peaches, Nectarines, from late frosts.
  • Clean greenhouses out and put in growbags ready for cucumbers and tomatoes.
  • Divide Hostas before they come into leaf.
  • Prune back Delphiniums and Penstemons to promote new flowers this spring.
  • Prune back spring flowering shrubs after flowering. For example Forsythia.
  • Cut the lawn and trim edges don’t forget to aerate the lawn with a fork to get air down to the roots.
  • Apply lawn weed and feeds do not apply after cutting the lawn wait 3 days after applying or you will scorch your lawn.
